Notified maximum demand (NMD) optimiser

Your notified maximum demand (NMD) is the capacity you reserve on the network, and you pay for it every month whether you use it or not. Set it too high and you pay for idle capacity; too low and exceedances bring excess charges.

Every input above is still the illustrative example, so the result is tagged assumed. Enter your own numbers to make it yours.

Assumed
R

An NMD change needs no equipment; enter any utility fee or consultant cost. Default R0.

Assumed
years

Years the lower NMD holds before load growth needs a new one. Default 5.

Assumed
R/yr

Usually none. Default R0.

Method

Recommended NMD
NMD* = ceil_step( max_m MD_m × (1 + growth) × (1 + headroom) )
Annual utilised capacity
AUC = max( NMD, max_m MD_m )
Eskom's definition: the higher of the NMD and the highest demand in a rolling 12 months.
Capacity charges for 12 months
C = AUC × (c_network + c_generation) × 12
Excess charge for the n-th exceedance
E_n = n × (MD − NMD) × c_network (first 2 exceedances within 5% of the NMD forgiven)
Our reading of the Eskom NMD rules: the count multiplies the charge, so repeated exceedances escalate.
Annual saving
S = (C + ΣE) at current NMD − (C + ΣE) at NMD*
Exceedance risk (indicator)
p_month = 1 − Φ( (NMD − μ) / σ ), p_year = 1 − (1 − p_month)^12
μ and σ are the mean and sample standard deviation of the 12 months. Low < 10% a year, moderate < 30%, high otherwise.

Assumptions

  • The next 12 months look like the last 12, scaled by the load growth you enter.
  • Both capacity charges are billed per kVA on the annual utilised capacity. Check your tariff: some municipal tariffs bill the NMD itself, or bill kVA differently.
  • Excess charges follow the Eskom-style rule above with the deadband and forgiven count you set; switch them off for tariffs without them.
  • The risk indicator treats months as independent draws from a normal distribution. Twelve points and seasonal peaks make it a rough guide, not a forecast.
  • Network charges usually depend on supply voltage and distance from the transmission network; use the rates for your supply point.
  • No connection charges or changes to other tariff components are included.
